We like to think of every business as its own character. None must play by the same rules, and each tends to have unique ways of handling their employees. Some businesses have an HR department, but of course, many others do not bother. Those without, although at more risk, sometimes never have issues arise. A small business could go many years without having a harassment complaint, but it only takes one to ruin their reputation.
On the other side, if you are an employee, you are entitled to fair treatment under the law. Employment discrimination occurs when an individual, current or potential employee, is treated unfairly because of their race, religious beliefs, age, sexual orientation, gender, familial status (e.g., pregnancy, marital status, obligation as a parent or caregiver) or disability.
There are two main types of discrimination at the workplace. Direct discrimination directly excludes individuals based upon the attributes listed above. Indirect discrimination is when prerequisites are added that some simply cannot meet. One example could be requiring a person with children to frequently work overtime or on the weekends.
It is unfortunate, but workplaces do not have to operate to a certain standard, and if no one holds them accountable, problems can persist.
